REFURBISHED FLUTES

 

This page includes repaired flutes which have been restored to performance playable condition having some material defect. Though every care is taken to manage inventory conditions to prevent cracking, many bamboo flutes may develop minor cracks, particularly in the North American climate and humidity, which do not always impact playing. Some cracks are only surface deep and do not impact or threaten the flute's sound; whereas other times bamboo may split. In most cases simply binding the flute will bring even a split flute back to playable condition and prevent further cracking. 

 

Bamboo, as a natural material has a single lengthwise grain that is strong to tensile force, but has a tendency to crack along this grain when changing humidity causes the wood to warp. In the process of manufacture, all bamboo is aged and dried and well over 50% of the selected bamboo will crack or split during this phase and be excluded from selection for making flutes. Despite this, changing conditions and variable climates can cause additional warping in selected bamboo that can result in cracking or splitting. Most flutes which develop such cracks can be repaired and played with no adverse effects on their sound - particularly if the crack is discovered early and bound before it is allowed to unduly split the bamboo.

 

Wagakki Canada lists flutes here from its own inventory which have been bound such that split or cracked flutes are restored to playable condition. Repairs are not always permanent as bindings can come loose over time with rough treatment, and so it is advisable to consult with Wagakki Canada if you find a binding has come loose and you are unable to rebind the flute yourself. 

 

As with new condition flutes, refurbished flutes require the same degree of care in order that they not develop additional cracks and should be stored in moderate humidity away from excessive heat or dryness.
